The present lot is a rare winter landscape by the Jewish painter Salomon Leonardus Verveer. The artist was a trendsetter in the 1850s when he started painting scenes of bustling and lively Jewish neighbourhoods. The current lot is the largest and final example of Verveer's execution of this theme. It is considered a key piece in the oeuvre of the Romantic painter, who seldom painted winter landscapes. We see Dutch townspeople going about their daily business, shivering from the cold that has captured Amsterdam. The snow-covered surfaces and the beautifully executed façades draw our attention immediately. Our eyes are eventually led up towards the Zuiderkerk, towering over the narrow city streets.

The present lot will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist by Christiaan Lucht, cat. no. S74/108.
