    Lot Essay

    The present work derives from the portrait of Gabrielle d'Estrées and one of her sisters bathing by the Master of the School of Fontainebleau, now in the Louvre, Paris. The subject is assumed to allude to the birth of César, son of Henry IV and his mistress Gabrielle d'Estrées.
