Lot Essay

Built by Barnard and launched at Deptford on 1s<\sup>t<\sup> June 1787, the 74-gun H.M.S. Orion, registered at 1,646 tons, played an integral part in the Royal Navy's campaigns against the French for nearly thirty years. During the course of her career she served under the command of such distinguished naval officers as Captain James Saumarez (1795-1799) and Captain (later Admiral) Edward Codrington (1805-1806). H.M.S. Orion fought in all the major actions of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, and her honours included: The Glorious First of June (1794); The battle of Groix (1795); The battle of Cape St Vincent (1797); The battle of the Nile (1798); and The battle of Trafalgar (1805).

It seems only fitting, therefore, that such a veteran of the Napoleonic campaigns should be broken up in 1814, the year of Napoleon's abdication and exile to Elba.
