SIR DAVID WILKIE, R.A. (CULTS, FIFE 1785-1841 GIBRALTAR)
An exhibition of old masters at the British Institution
oil on panel
7 x 11 7⁄8 in. (17.8 x 30.3 cm.)

In this sketch Wilkie has essentially chosen to depict a private view of the British Institution’s loan exhibition of 1815, with some alterations to the pictures displayed. At the centre of the composition two figures stand apart from the group, which can be identified as the Prince Regent in red and the Marquis of Stafford wearing the blue garter sash. Though George III was nominally the Institution’s patron, at this date he was not appearing in public so his duties fell to the Regent, who lent many of his own paintings to the 1815 exhibition. His private visit was reported in The Times, 4 May 1815: ‘His Royal Highness...accompanied by the Duke of Clarence and General Bloomfield, walked to the British Institution, to see the paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, Vandyke, and other artists of the Flemish and Dutch schools. The Regent was received by the Marquis of Stafford and others of the Directors. He remained in the exhibition near two hours, when he returned to Carlton-house, and took an airing on horseback’. It is not known if Wilkie was in fact present at this private view, but he would undoubtedly have visited the exhibition.

Moving from left to right of the sketch, we can identify van Dyck’s Equestrian Portrait of Charles I (London, National Gallery), lent in 1815 by the Duke of Marlborough. Directly to the right is Rubens’ Judgement of Paris (London, National Gallery), which at this date was in the collection of Thomas Penrice and was not lent to the exhibition; instead, it is likely that Wilkie would have had the opportunity to study in at the time of Lord Kinnaird’s sale in 1813. To the right of this we find St. Ambrose and the Emperor Theodosius by van Dyck (London, National Gallery). Again, this was not lent to the Institution by its then owner John Julius Angerstein, but this and his other painting, Rembrandt’s Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery (seen here below Charles I) were both lent to the British Institution for artists to study at some point after his acquisition of the work in 1807. On the easel, the main focus of the Prince and Stafford, is a work owned by the latter, Cuyp’s The Landing of Prince Maurice at Dort (Private collection), which was actually exhibited in 1815.

Figures by a country tavern
oil on panel
5 5⁄8 x 7 3⁄8 in. (14.3 x 18.8 cm.)

Though this little sketch may, at first glance, be taken as a copy after Teniers, it is in fact entirely of Wilkie’s own invention, though evidently using the Dutch master as his inspiration. As his first biographer, Allan Cunningham noted: ‘It was a favourite theory of [Wilkie’s] to keep some fine picture in his mind while his brush was wet, that...he might warm his taste by its beauties, and, without exactly imitating, create something akin to it in spirit and feeling’ (The Life of Sir David Wilkie, London, 1843, I, p. 435).

Diana and Actaeon
oil on panel
5 x 7 in. (12.7 x 17.8 cm.)

This essay in the manner of Titian, a rare engagement on Wilkie’s part with the subject of the nude, likely takes as its primary inspiration Titian’s work of the same name and its companion piece Diana and Callisto (jointly owned by the National Gallery, London and National Gallery, Edinburgh), which Wilkie would have seen in the collection of the Marquis of Strafford. The nymph to the far right seems to have been drawn from the figure of Ariadne in Bacchus and Ariadne (National Gallery, London), Wilkie has even dressed her in corresponding blue and red.

SIR DAVID WILKIE, R.A. (CULTS, FIFE 1785-1841 GIBRALTAR)
The Dortie Bairn
oil on panel
6 x 5 1⁄4 in. (15.2 x 13.3 cm.)

Executed in late 1816 or early 1817, the title of this painting means 'the sullen child'. The subject may loosely have been taken from one of the verse fables of Wilkie’s third cousin, the Rev. William Wilkie, entitled The young lady and the looking-glass. First published in 1768, these poems were intended as moral lessons. In this case, the young girl was meant to have been sullen and angry, until her mother gave her a mirror:

‘That it might show her how deform'd
She look'd, and frightful when she storm'd;
And warn her, as she priz'd her beauty,
To bend her humour to her duty.
All this the looking glass achiev'd....
The maid, who spurn'd at all advice,
Grew tame and gentle in a trice.’

In 1829 Wilkie wrote to the then owner, Sir Gordon Willoughby, asking to borrow the painting so that it could be engraved for The Amulet, an annual edited by Samuel Carter Hall, where it appeared opposite his cousin’s texts. A preparatory drawing for the painting can be found in Wilkie’s sketchbook in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

This is a study for a work shown at the Royal Academy 1816, The Rabbit on the Wall - a candle-light amusement, in which a father entertains his children by making shadow puppets (Private collection). SIR DAVID WILKIE, R.A. (CULTS, FIFE 1785-1841 GIBRALTAR)
Seven figures in a church, Ghent
oil on panel
7 x 6 1⁄8 in. (17.8 x 15.5 cm.)

When this painting first entered the collection of Sir Willoughby Gordon, it was described as being a scene in Ghent. It is not, however, the place that is the focus of the work, but the costume of the people. Wilkie had a fascination for different national dress that he indulged in his trips to France in 1814 and the Low Countries in 1816, where he noted ‘the inveteracy of the resemblance between the Dutch and Flemish pictures [of the seventeenth century] and their [present-day] originals.’

Interior with figures by a window
oil on panel
6 3⁄8 x 5 3⁄4 in. (16.2 x 14.6 cm.)

This painting recalls the work of Adriaen van Ostade, a painter in whom Wilkie had long been interested. The specific inspiration for the scene may have been Ostade's Interior of a cottage (Royal Collection, Buckingham Palace), which he would have had an opportunity to examine when it was sold at Christie's on 12 June 1811, before being acquired by the Prince Regent for Carlton House.
