Christie's Fine Printed Books, Manuscripts, and Science auction in New York brings together an exceptional selection of material spanning the history of discovery, exploration, and ideas. Highlights include important early printed cartography, led by Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum and Speed's The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine; landmarks of science and mathematics from a distinguished private California collection, including a rare offprint of Mendel's Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybride, a fine first edition of Newton's Principia, Turing's "On Computable Numbers," and works by Einstein and Kepler. There is also a Noble Fragment from the Gutenberg Bible, a substantial Gibeon meteorite, and a collection of early NASA photographs. The sale is rounded out by a number of important pieces of Americana, including the first secure mobile phone placed in a presidential limousine, a scarce patent signed by George Washington, and an extensive archive regarding the Nikola Tesla Company, the Niagara Falls Power Company, and the implementation of alternating current.
