Lot Essay
The so-called ‘printdrawings’ by Ploos van Amstel are generally considered one of the most important contributions to reproductive graphic art. The present collection of 46 prints are described by Laurentius, Niemeijer and Ploos van Amstel as the ‘main body’ (‘hoofdwerk’) of the artist’s graphic oeuvre. The artist published the prints over a period of more than twenty years. They were again published, with an additional 59 prints, by Christiaan Josi (1768-1828) in 1821.
