達明安• 赫斯特的作品中常引用基督教宗教藝術及圖像，此幅絲網印刷版畫的標題是出自《聖經》“我的上帝，我的上帝，為甚麼離棄我？”（詩 22:1）但 這句更廣為人知的出處其實是耶穌基督受難被釘於十字架上時所說的銘言。此作中的蝴蝶翅膀排列參考了歐洲大教堂花窗及昆蟲學家收藏標本的圖樣，寓意科學即為新興的世俗宗教。
