"Ma réaction instinctive est de me taire devant un tableau. Plus une toile me frappe, bien entendu, plus je me sens gauche. C'est bien ce que j'attends confusément d'un tableau: qu'il me coupe la parole. On n'empêchera pas qu'une toile soit d'abord une présence hiératique, close sur elle-même. On détruit une bonne part du bonheur qu'elle procure en tentant de la cerner de trop près."
