Field Marshal The Right Honourable The Earl Alexander of Tunis was one of the outstanding generals of the Second World War. He was subsequently appointed as Governor General of Canada and was asked by his friend Sir Winston Churchill to become Minister of Defence (1952-54). Earl Alexander spent the last fifteen years of his life as a director of several firms including Barclays Bank. He was a passionate painter and his painting companions included Churchill and Edward Seago. Seago painted a portrait of Earl Alexander, now in the National Portrait Gallery. (see E. Seago, The Paintings of Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis, London, 1973).
