The Great Indoors: Monaco & Southampton

Throughout the twentieth century and up to the present day, interior scenes have been the vehicle for a diverse range of artistic expression. They might depict a studio or home, opening an intimate window onto the artist’s personal environment. They can set the scene for the contemplation of a still life, or for the portrayal of friends and loved ones. Some interiors offer a peaceful refuge from the outside world: others are saturated with mood and drama. For many artists, they are the basis for flights of imagination, bold experiments in pattern and form, and for a rich dialogue with the art of the past. From established masters such as Pablo Picasso and David Hockney to contemporary names including Hilary Pecis and Shara Hughes, The Great Indoors explores the pivotal role that the interior has played in art history, placing works from across the century in captivating conversation.
