Old Master Paintings Private Selling Exhibition

Old Master Paintings represent the highest achievement of Western civilisation in the realm of the visual arts. These are the works of those art-makers, inspired and poetic craftsmen, whose legacy was so revered by the late Seventeenth Century that art writers termed them the "Old Masters". In the language of the time, the word "master" had a different connotation than it does today. It meant someone who had truly mastered his chosen craft, a real virtuoso, a consummate technician; but also "master" in the sense of "teacher", someone whose example was so powerful that it would continue to inspire and instruct his successors long after he (or she) had gone. In this sense of "Past Teachers", the Old Masters continue to exert their miraculous effects today, astonishing us all. It is a great honour for Christie's one again to bring a selection of Old Masters to Hong Kong, including some artists who have never before been seen in China.
