Art of the Cover

Online Selling Exhibition | 19 May - 19 June

Art of the Cover features original paintings printed on the cover of some of the most important American publications of the 20th century, from magazines like The Saturday Evening Post and Popular Magazine to E.B. White’s classic children’s novel Charlotte’s Web. Executed during the Golden Age of Illustration, these works helped to establish artists such as Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth and J.C. Leyendecker as household names. Popular cover paintings by illustrators, including Philip Goodwin, Jessie Willcox Smith, Richard Sargent and George Hughes, became key to creating a visual narrative of modern American life. Their art provided hope and humour in the midst of some of the best and worst times in our nation’s history and continues to inspire a similar spirit amidst the uncertainty of today’s world.

Works featured are currently available via Christie’s Private Sales. Please enquire with a specialist for more details.
