Christie’s is proud to present Gestures, a selling exhibition of Contemporary Ink paintings by Pan Gongkai, Wang Dongling, and Wu Yi. Born between the 1930s and 1940s, the three artists are some of the most influential figures in the field. The powerful, multifarious line connects their work: the most fundamental component in Chinese ink art, it can denote a tree, a lotus stem, a mountain, a strong wave in the sea, or a written character. Simplistic in appearance, it represents the culmination of painterly skills acquired over a lifetime. Gestures refers to the ever-changing and at times dance-like movements of the artists when they paint – as the brush becomes an extension of the body, gestures and art are fused into one.
