Art of the Cover

Sale Overview
The Art of the Cover features original paintings printed on the cover of some of the most important American publications of the twentieth century, from magazines like The Saturday Evening Post and Popular Magazine to E.B. White’s classic children’s novel Charlotte’s Web. Executed during a Golden Age of Illustration, these works helped establish artists like Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth and J.C. Leyendecker as household names. Moreover, popular cover paintings by illustrators, including Philip Goodwin, Jessie Willcox Smith, Richard Sargent and George Hughes, became key to creating the visual narrative of modern American life. Their art provided hope and humor in the midst of some of the best and worst times in our nation’s history, and continues to inspire a similar spirit amidst the uncertainty of today’s world.
