Christie’s will offer An Adventurous Spirit, an important private collection across two sales in December 2018 and February 2019. On 13 December Christie’s will hold a dedicated collection sale and on 27 February 2019 five major works from the collection will be included in the Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale. The collection is to be sold anonymously to benefit a charitable foundation, and will be on view during Classic Week this December in London.
Led by a pointillist Opus masterpiece by Paul Signac, a rare, recently rediscovered Impressionist painting by Gustave Caillebotte and a daringly composed Parisian street scene by Félix Vallotton, the collection provides a remarkable window into the private world created by this collector in his homes in London, St Tropez and St Barths and demonstrates his unique and discerning eye. The collection also includes exceptional English and French furniture and decorative arts, 19th-century and Victorian paintings, silver, jewellery, 20th-century design and antiquities as well as soft furnishings, lighting and decorative objects.
The dedicated collection sale, this December is led by an important painting by Sir Alfred Munnings, other highlights include a pair of rare Regence coquilliers attributed to the great master ébéniste to the French Royal Court Andre-Charles Boulle, and a flock of sheep by the renowned sculptor François-Xavier Lalanne.
