The highlight of the sale, a spectacular view of Scarborough by Joseph Mallord William Turner, R.A. dating from 1818, masterfully depicts the waves breaking over the rocks in the foreground with Scarborough castle, seen from the south, looming in the distance. John Ruskin, the art critic, first owned this work.
Works of two of the finest exponents of the English topographical tradition are included in the salethree large bodycolor drawings by Paul Sandby, R.A., two of which are from the estate of The Earl of Croome; and four atmospheric watercolors by Francis Towne.
Two fascinating views of figures in barn interiors by William Henry Hunt, O.W.S. allow an interesting comparison of the artist's early and later work.
Portraits by Edward Robert Hughes and John Ruskin and Au Louvre by James Jacques Joseph Tissot represent quintessential works from the Victorian period.
Also featured are watercolors by William Roberts; examples by David Bomberg from his Bargee series; drawings by key figures such as Sir William Russell Flint, R.A., L.S. Lowry, Graham Sutherland and Augustus John.
