John Flaxman
By Harriet Drummond

John Flaxman's outline illustrations of Aeschylus, Homer, Dante and Hesiod won him Europe-wide fame and were key works in the neoclassical revival of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They were praised by Schlegel and had a strong influence on such artists as David, Ingres, Tharwaldsen, Runge - even Goya. This Hesiod series, although originating as a scheme during the same period, did not actually appear until 1817, and is engraved by no less a figure than William Blake.

Harriet Drummond is Head of the British Drawings and Watercolours Department.
