The Library of William Foyle
Sale 6348
11-13 July 2000
London, King Street

The Library of William Foyle comprises over 4,000 books from the 11th to the 20th century and includes Illuminated and Historical Manuscripts, Early Printing and Continental Books, and 16th-19th century English Literature. The majority of the works, purchased in the 1940s and 1950s, came from the libraries of great English bibliophiles such as Harmsworth, Dyson Perrins, Amherst, St. John Hornby, Mark Masterman Sykes, Michael Wodhull, and others. After Foyle acquired the works they were shelved in the monks' dormitory of Beeleigh Abbey, a 12th century monastery on the River Chelmer at Maldon in Essex. The re-emergence of the largest British book collection to appear at auction provides scholars and collectors with an exciting opportunity to make new and fascinating discoveries.
