Dear Fellow Travellers,
This spring, Christie’s New York hosted a historic milestone for Asian Art: The seven-part auctions of The Collection of Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, comprising Chinese works of art and furniture, as well as Indian, Himalayan, Japanese and Southeast Asian works, realized a combined total of $134,091,188 (£89,841,095 / € 123,363,892).
Four world auction records were set, with two lots topping $5 million and 23 lots over the $1 million mark – a testament not only to Mr. Ellsworth’s unparalleled connoisseur’s eye, but to the growing appetite among collectors worldwide for the arts of Asia.
China’s art market is so exciting, in part because the economy continues to produce entrepreneurs and professionals with considerable disposable income, fueling a national obsession with art. It’s a thriving economic sector, and the profession of art historian is seen as a smart career choice, as lots of young artists, new gallerists, and collectors seek to acquire the in-depth knowledge of what constitutes the best examples of both contemporary and traditional Chinese art.
Aspiring collectors can develop their own connoisseur’s eye by securing a spot on the exclusive tour, “Ancient to Contemporary China,” 23 October – 1 November, 2015, organized by Christie’s Travel, in association with Abercrombie & Kent.
Hosted by Nixi Cura, Programme Director of the Arts of China post graduate programme at Christie’s Education in London, the trip offers a complete immersion in both the arts of China and the culture that shaped it:
