Stemcups with this design reflect the Qianlong emperor's interest in Lamaist Buddhism, which flourished during his reign. Not only were there a number of Lamaist temples in Beijing, a copy of the Tibetan Potala Palace was built at Chengde.
Compare a similar stemcup in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, included in the Catalog of the Special Exhibition of K'ang-Hsi, Yung-Cheng and Ch'ien'Lung Porcelain Ware from the Ch'ing Dynasty in the National Palace Museum, Taipei 1986, Pl. 69. Another is in the Groninger Museum, illustrated by C.J.A. Jörg in Oosterse keramiek uit Groninger kollekties, Groningen, 1982, no. 100.
