A master visual storyteller, Danny Lyon is an American photographer known for his documentary-style work that captures the raw and unfiltered essence of American subcultures and social movements. His career began in the 1960s, where his work reflected his strong commitment to civil rights and social justice, documenting marginalised communities and the complexities of American life.
Lyon was born in 1942 in Brooklyn, New York, and studied history and philosophy at the University of Chicago in the 1960s. As the photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Lyon captured some of the civil rights movement’s most compelling moments. He works in the style of photographic New Journalism, where he is known to immerse himself into the lives of the subjects under his lens.
One of Lyon’s most iconic works is The Bikeriders, a groundbreaking photo series in which he documented American biker culture in the 1960s. Lyons featured racers of McHenry, Illinois and members of the the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club, which he rode with between 1965 and 1967. This project, which later became a photobook, published in 1968, offers a rare and intimate look into and the lives of bikers, showing their camaraderie, freedom and rebellion against mainstream society.
Lyon’s seminal photobook Conversations with the Dead (1971) is a powerful exploration of life inside Texas prisons. He photographed and interviewed inmates, offering a stark and humanising portrayal of the incarcerated. This series remains one of his most impactful bodies of work, providing a rare glimpse into a closed-off world and commenting on the larger issue of America’s prison system.
Danny Lyon is a two-time Guggenheim Fellowship recipient and has exhibited widely at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Menil Collection in Texas and more.
Lyon’s commitment to capturing the realities of American life has made him one of the most important figures in documentary photography, with a body of work that remains timeless and relevant.
