Henri Hayden

Henri Hayden (1883–1970) was a Polish-born painter who became an integral figure in the Parisian avant-garde of the early 20th century. Born in Warsaw, he initially studied engineering before enrolling at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, where he trained in painting. In 1907 he moved to Paris, joining the vibrant artistic community of Montparnasse, a decisive shift that placed him at the centre of European modernism.

Hayden’s early work reflected his academic training, but he quickly absorbed the lessons of Post-Impressionism and Fauvism. By the 1910s, his art aligned with Cubism, and he exhibited alongside figures such as Juan Gris, Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger. His adoption of Cubism was distinguished by a lyrical sensitivity to colour and form, which lent his compositions a more approachable character compared to the stricter analytical style of his contemporaries.

After the First World War, Hayden gradually moved away from Cubism, developing a more naturalistic and expressive mode of painting. His landscapes, still lifes and portraits combined structural clarity with vibrant colour, earning him critical recognition. He exhibited widely in Paris, including at the prestigious Salon d’Automne, and maintained close connections with both avant-garde and more traditional circles.

Hayden lived and worked in France for the rest of his life, becoming a French citizen in 1920. His career demonstrates the dynamic interplay between the radical innovations of early modernism and the enduring appeal of representational painting. Today, his works are held in major collections such as the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
