The brand is best known for its pilot watches, which remain central to IWC today. IWC also produces dress watches, dive watches and collectible models with sophisticated complications such as the IWC Schaffhausen Warhorse. This watch was developed for the firm’s 125th anniversary in 1993. In 2021, Christie’s sold an extremely rare example with full diamond setting for HK$3,250,000.
During its early years, IWC produced pocket watches and wristwatches for men and women. Throughout World War I and World War II, IWC took on highly profitable and commercial military contracts, producing more pilot watches than any other company. The first special edition IWC pilot watch was released in 1936, followed in 1939 by the IWC Portugieser. In response to a surge in demand, the firm released the IWC Big Pilot’s watch in 1940.
Special edition pilot watches include the IWC Spitfire, IWC Top Gun, IWC Le Petit Prince and the IWC Antoine De Saint-Expuéry. IWC’s first Pilot’s Watch Mark 11 appeared in 1948. Popular successors include the IWC Mark XX and the IWC Mark XVIII.
In 1955, the brand launched the IWC Ingenieur with automatic winding. This was followed in 1967 by the IWC Aquatimer. Water-resistant to 20 bar, this diver’s watch would go on to become the watch of choice for professional use underwater.
IWC made history in 1980 by producing the world’s first chronograph in a titanium case. A decade later it introduced the wristwatch-sized Grande Complication.
The Richemont era continues to see new innovations and expansion at IWC. A double moon display was added to the perpetual calendar in the Portugieser line, while an external/internal rotating bezel was introduced to the Aquatimer. In 2011, the firm launched the elegant IWC Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days. The IWC Big Pilot 43 with calibre 82 and open case back appeared in 2021.
IWC watches are regularly sold at auction. Highly collectible models include the IWC Schaffhausen and watches with the IWC Grande Complication.
