Jacob van Ruisdael was one of the foremost landscape painters of the Dutch Golden Age, transforming the depiction of nature into a powerful expression of atmosphere and emotion. Working at a time when landscape was emerging as an independent genre, he elevated it through his meticulous observation along with remarkable dramatic intensity..
Born in Haarlem, Netherlands around 1628 into a family of painters and frame makers, Van Ruisdael trained within the city’s thriving artistic community before joining the Guild of Saint Luke in 1648. His early works depict the dunes, river and forests of the Dutch countryside with extraordinary precision, reflecting his close study of the natural world. After settling in Amsterdam in the 1650s, his landscapes became increasingly ambitious in scale and conception. The artist's skilled use of dramatic skies and shifting light is demonstrated in masterpieces such as The Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede (c.1670) and The Jewish Cemetery (c.1655–1660).
Though rooted in direct observation, Van Ruisdael’s landscapes were rarely literal records of place. Instead, he arranged natural elements into carefully balanced compositions that conveyed the power and transience of nature. His mastery of light, texture and atmosphere profoundly influenced generations of artists, from his Dutch contemporaries to the Romantic painters of the 18th and 19th centuries. Among his greatest admirers was John Constable, who celebrated the artist’s naturalistic treatment of weather and even made a copy of Ruisdael’s Landscape with Windmills near Haarlem.
Van Ruisdael died in 1682, leaving an oeuvre of around 700 paintings, 100 drawings and several etchings. Today, the artist's works are held in the world’s leading museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
