Jean Francois Millet

Jean-François Millet (1814–1875) was a French painter and draughtsman whose depictions of rural life made him one of the central figures of the Barbizon School. Born into a peasant family in Normandy, Millet’s early familiarity with agricultural labour profoundly shaped his art, which consistently emphasised the dignity and hardship of the working poor.

He trained in Cherbourg and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was influenced by both the Old Masters and contemporary realist tendencies. After early struggles, he settled in the village of Barbizon in the 1840s, joining a community of painters committed to working directly from nature.

Millet became best known for his monumental images of peasants engaged in everyday tasks: sowing, gleaning, or tending flocks. Works such as The Gleaners (1857) and The Angelus (1857–59) elevated rural labour to the level of history painting, imbuing simple gestures with solemnity and spiritual resonance. His style combined solid, sculptural forms with subdued tones, emphasising both physical endurance and moral gravity.

Initially criticised for perceived political overtones in his portrayal of the peasantry, Millet was later acclaimed for his honesty and humanity. His work influenced generations of artists, from Vincent van Gogh to the early 20th-century Social Realists.

Millet died in Barbizon in 1875, leaving behind a body of work that redefined the representation of rural life in European art. His paintings and drawings are housed in leading institutions, including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Louvre, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
