洛克威尔于1894年生于纽约市,先后就读于Chase艺术学校、国家设计学院及纽约艺术学生联盟。 其艺术生涯起步甚早,少年时已为美国童军官方刊物《Boys’ Life》及其他儿童杂志绘制插图。 1916年,他首次为《星期六晚邮报》绘制封面插画,自此虽亦为《文学文摘》、《生活》及《Look》等刊物创作,但其名字总与《星期六晚邮报》密不可分。
1940年代,当欧洲陷入纳粹铁蹄之下,洛克威尔创作出其传世巨作《四大自由》(Four Freedoms)系列,以坚定笔触捍卫自由,对抗日益蔓延的暴政黑暗。 洛克威尔的美学风格蕴含脆弱与纯真的气息,成为社会评论与人道主义宣传的完美载体,对美国国内的政治舆论产生深远影响。
战后岁月中,他的诸多作品——如《第一次到美容院》(First Trip to the Beauty Shop,1972)——皆洋溢着其标志性的幽默与温情,或记录重要的公民时刻,例如1965年为宇航员Grissom与Young所绘的肖像。 然而,洛克威尔始终不忘以画笔回应社会议题,民权运动杰作《我们共同面对的问题》(The Problem We All Live With,1963)成为其中的巅峰之作。 洛克威尔于1978年辞世。
