Robert Adams

Robert Adams captures the changing landscapes of the American West, blending environmentalism with a poetic visual style. Known for his stark, black-and-white images, the American photographer explores the impact of human development on nature, revealing both beauty and destruction in his meticulously composed photographs.

Born in 1937 in Orange, New Jersey, Adams grew up in Colorado, where the open spaces of the American West left a profound impact on him. Originally an English teacher at Colorado College, he took up photography in the 1960s. Adams first captured prairie churches and early Hispanic art, but later turned towards exploring nature and landscape under urbanism and industrial growth.

When Robert Adams first started out as a photographer, the most recognisable images of the American West belonged to another Adams — Ansel Adams. While Ansel Adams’s work presents the boundless majesty of nature as a poignant call to conservative, Robert Adams’s approach is more objective, an honest documentary of the interaction of man with land.

Adams’s work often evokes a sense of melancholy, portraying both the beauty of the natural world and the irreversible harm caused by urbanisation. His images are quiet yet powerful, marked by their minimalist composition and sensitivity to light. For over four decades, Robert Adams documented the varying tapestry that is the American West in more than 50 photo books. He has exhibited widely and internationally, and his works now belong in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and more.
