Roman Opalka

Roman Opałka was a French-born Polish painter best known for his groundbreaking, lifelong series ‘1965/1–∞’, which reflects his profound exploration of time, existence and the documentation of ageing.

Born in 1931 in Abbeville-Saint-Lucien, France, Opałka and his family returned to Poland in 1935 but were deported after the Nazi invasion. After the war, he studied at the School of Art and Design in Łódź and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he began to develop his unique conceptual approach to painting.

In 1965, Opałka embarked on his conceptual tour de force, which he called his ‘programme’, and started to paint sequential numbers on potentially infinite canvases. Each painting, or Détail, was a continuation of the previous one, using the same style of brush and zinc white paint throughout. This meditative process of numbering reflected the passage of time and the inexorability of human life.

Opałka’s work with numbers is seen as a relentless pursuit of infinity, something he could never fully complete. From 1972 onward, the painter introduced a minute amount of titanium white into the black background with each subsequent work in a quest to reach a state of ‘absolute white’. Canvases from later in his life are snowy fields where digits are barely discernible until examined in close proximity. This trend toward equilibrium intensifies the gravity of Opałka’s project that, ironically, signals a finite end.

To further emphasise the personal nature of this endeavour, Opałka took self-portraits at the end of each day in front of the canvas and made recordings of him reciting each number aloud as he painted. The paintings, photographs and recordings, together, present a multi-sensorial transcription of time and Opałka’s life.

By the time of his death in 2011, Opałka had reached the number 5,607,249, concluding a 46-year-long project. His work is celebrated for its philosophical depth and rigor and can now be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and other major institutions.
