Born in Jilin, China in 1965, Zhang studied at the Arts and Design Institute of Wuxi Technical University before graduating in 1989 and moving to Shanghai. The city’s rapid urban transformation became a lasting source of inspiration. His early figurative paintings, which were characterised by gestural brushwork, gradually gave way to still lifes, trees and architectural interiors, where buckets, hoses, cardboard boxes and empty rooms became his recurring subjects. Through these familiar motifs, Zhang reveals the emotional and psychological resonance of the everyday. His fluid, expressive style draws on the traditions of Chinese brush painting, while the visible pencil grids that often remain beneath the paint echo Renaissance compositional techniques.
Over the past two decades, Zhang’s practice has become increasingly abstract, dissolving the boundaries between object and environment through fluid lines, translucent layers of paint and immersive wall paintings that extend beyond the canvas. In his celebrated Space Paintings, he paints directly onto gallery walls, collapsing the distinction between artwork, architecture and lived experience. Across every phase of his career, Zhang has remained committed to exploring how memory and perception shape our understanding of the world. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Long Museum Shanghai, ICA in London and the Galleria Borghese in Rome.
