What are condition reports?

A condition report is a written description of an artwork or object’s physical state, prepared by a specialist.

What information do condition reports include?

Lots are sold ‘as is’ at auctions, in the condition they are at the time of sale. This condition can vary widely due to factors such as age and wear.

Condition reports go beyond a typical lot description and include an assessment of the physical state of an artwork or object at the time of auction. This may cover areas such as previous damage, fading, restoration and repair works.

Where can I find a lot’s condition report?

You can request a condition report for the lot you are looking to bid on, with contact details available on the relevant lot page. The report itself may also be included on a lot’s webpage.

Condition reports are provided free of charge and are for guidance only — Christie’s always recommend viewing items in person where possible. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure that you have requested, received and considered any condition report.
