Professor Jonathan Brown dated the present drawing, together with a large group depicting Saint Sebastian, to the 1620s and early 1630s (drawings in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Princeton University Art Museum; the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; The Indiana University Art Museum, Bloomington; the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, San Francisco; and another formerly in the Gere Collection, London, J. Brown, op. cit., nos. 6, 10, 12-3, 17, 19). In most of these sheets the Saint is depicted just before his martyrdom, tied, or being tied, to a tree. A drawing very close in handling and figure type to the present sheet is in the Kupferstichkabinett in Dresden, W. Vitzthum, 'Disegni inediti di Ribera', Arte Illustrata, 4, 1971, p. 78, fig. 5.
