Wilhelmina Frederica Louise Charlotte Marianne was a daughter of King William I of the Netherlands and his first cousin, Wilhelmina of Prussia. Marianne married Albert, Prince of Prussia, in 1830. Despite Albert's infidelities, she was not allowed to divorce him until she fell pregnant from her driver and private secretary, Johannes van Rossum, in 1849. Due to this faux-pas, she was ostracised by the courts of both Berlin and The Hague.
Two earlier miniatures of her are illustrated in K. E. Schaffers-Bodenhausen/M. E. Tiethoff-Spliethoff, The Portrait Miniatures in the Collections of the House of Orange-Nassau, Zwolle, 1993, p. 129.
