Theodore Reff suggerisce in una lettera del 9 maggio 2006 che 'dal punto di vista stilistico questo disegno, in cui linee fluide e sottili da sole descrivono le forme, corrisponde da vicino agli schizzi di cavalli e fantini in un taccuino che Degas utilizzò nei tardi anni Sessanta dell'Ottocento e agli inizi del decennio successivo; per un paragone si può confrontare, in Th. Reff, The Notebooks of Edgar Degas, Oxford 1976, il taccuino 18, foll. 58, 70, 78, 80 ecc..."
