This press is after a design for a 'Commode Clothes press' in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754, pl. CXXXI. A mahogany press based on the same Chippendale design was formerly in the Mulliner and William Randolph Hearst Collections and is now in the Gerstenfeld Collection (E. Lennox-Boyd, Masterpieces of English Furniture, The Gerstenfeld Collection, London, 1998, pp.52-54).
