The art of George Minne -- leading light in the artistic circles of Laethem -- was profoundly imbued with the aura of the Symbolist movement. It was Rodin who encouraged him to explore the themes of melancholia and introspection. Minne's group 'Les Saintes Femmes au Tombeau', illustrates a theme that the artist explored throughout his life. The only other wood version of this subject is in the collection of the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels. Versions in plaster and in bronze are in the collections of the Kunsthalle, Hamburg, and the Dienstcentrum Ledeberg, Gand. Within the collection of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, this sculpture relates closely in sensibility to the tapestry and pastels by Edward Burne-Jones and the drawing by Gabriel Dante Rossetti

figure de proue du premier groupe de Laethem, George Minne est très lié au mouvement symboliste et bénéficie des encouragements de Rodin. Ses oeuvres sont empreintes de mélancolie et de recueillement, caractéristiques de son expression artistique. Les Saintes Femmes au Tombeau en sont une parfaite illustration. L'unique autre exemplaire connu de ce groupe en bois est conservé aux Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts Bruxelles. Des versions en pltre et en bronze font partie notamment des collections de la Kunsthalle de Hambourg et du Dienstcentrum Ledeberg de Gand. Cette sculpture se rattache, au sein de la collection Yves Saint Laurent et Pierre Bergé, aux tapisseries et pastels préraphalites d'Edward Burne-Jones ainsi qu'au dessin de gabriel Dante Rossetti
