The sitter was the second son of Edward, 5th Earl of Drogheda and his first wife, Lady Sarah Ponsonby, daughter of the 1st Earl of Bessborough. Between 1752 and 1758 he was styled Viscount Moore. He succeeded to the earldom in 1758 when his father and elder brother Edward were drowned in the Irish Channel. Moore joined the army in 1744 and in 1759 was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the 19th, later 18th, Light Dragoons. He had a distinguished military career and was eventually promoted to Field Marshal in 1821. He married Lady Anne Seymour, daughter of the 1st Marquess of Hereford in 1766. Reynolds' sitters books record appointments with Lord Drogheda between January and April 1761.
