This coastal scene is one of a 'series' that Churchill painted during the 1930s, in which he demonstrates his fascination with the sea breaking on the shore. The exact location of this work is not known, but these coastal scenes appear to be painted from the French Riviera.

William Greenshields was Churchill's butler between 1948 and 1953. The Seashore was gifted to him by Churchill, as well as a further work called Antibes, sold at Sotheby's, London, on 20 April 1966, lot 110.

Since 1977, The Queen's Silver Jubilee Trust has supported charities that work with young people in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and the Commonwealth. Through its grant-making activity, the Trust has helped hundreds of thousands of young people to find employment, volunteer in their local communities or experience new opportunities that they would not otherwise have enjoyed.

We are very grateful to David Coombs for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
