Sarah Morris is a painter and filmmaker, who is exploring specific forms of communication. Morris's films operate between documentary and non-narrative fiction while focusing on sites of production and leisure. Morris views her films as a parallel activity to her paintings. Her paintings convey multiple perspectives regarding appearance, form and ideology while operating in the gap between the facades of corporate architecture and pure abstraction. A critique of power is combined with a practice that is inspired by cinematic architecture, industrial design and urban theater.
She attended Brown University, Cambridge University, and the Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program. She received the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painting Award in 2001, and in 1999-2000 was an American Academy Award, Berlin Prize Fellow. Solo exhibitions include the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2005); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2005); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2005); Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover (2005); Kunstforeningen, Copenhagen (2004); Miami MOCA (2002); Nationalgalerie im Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2001), among many others. She has upcoming exhibitions at the MMK Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt/Main and the Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna in 2009. Sarah Morris lives and works in New York and London.
