Girodet's drawing is inspired by a print by Claude Vignon of the fourteenth century Mongol ruler, Tamerlane. Girodet, a pupil of Jacques-Louis David by late 1783 or early 1784 dedicated this drawing to his master. The drawing remained in the family of Girodet's descendents until its appearance at auction in 1994.
