Ce dessin appartient à une série d'études d'animaux, souvent copiés d'après des gravures de Stefano della Bella ou de Ridinger. Il est préparatoire à l'un des lions représentés dans une fresque de Tiepolo à la villa Tiepolo-Duodo à Zianigo près de Venise (J. Byam Shaw, 'The remaining Frescoes in the Villa Tiepolo at Zianigo', dans Burlington Magazine, novembre 1959, no. 680, CI, pp. 391-5, ill. 34).
