When he first designed stained glass, in 1951, John Piper had been a practising artist for twenty-six years. Piper is generally accepted as being Britain's leading designer of stained glass. The present work, created in 1959, is a preparatory drawing for a stained glass window in Tetbury, Gloucester, which was never executed. The composition reflects Piper's abstract painting of the late 1950s.
