John Closterman developed a strong reputation as one of London's leading portraitists in the late 17th century, depicting royalty, nobility and key society figures of the period. The Radclyffe family enjoyed a prominent position within this society, forging a close relationship with the Stuart Court. Edward Radclyffe's father, Francis, was created Earl of Derwentwater by James II in 1688 as a reward for his loyalty to the Catholic King, while Edward himself married the daughter of King Charles II and Moll Davis, Lady Mary Tudor, in 1687. Two of the couple's sons, James, 3rd Earl, and Charles, 5th Earl, would go on to be executed for their involvement in the Jacobite rebellions. Dr. Malcolm Rogers has confirmed the attribution and dated the work to the 1690s on the basis of photographs.
