Of this series, only plate III was published in the periodical Die Schaffenden in an edition of one hundred on laid paper and 25 on Japan paper in 1920. The present impressions are extremely rare examples from the early edition of ten only, printed for Fritz Gurlitt and subtly handcoloured in pale yellow, red and blue.
Pechstein must have applied the watercolour shortly after printing, when the black ink was still fresh, thereby smudging it slightly. The overall effect is that of a slightly smoky, dingy cabaret, with the stage bathed in limelight.
