THE PROPERTY OF A LADY 'I was just twenty years of age and in my final years as an art student when I first contacted Lowry. I had been a great admirer of his work since schooldays and having to write a thesis for my final exams, I wrote to Lowry and asked if I could use him as my subject matter. His response in November 1965 was very positive and he arranged that I should meet him at his home in Mottram in January 1966. It was a cold January day and the house looked quite bleak and dark but this was soon surpassed by the warmth of his welcome. He first asked had I brought paintings to show him as he was always interested in students' work. I was just armed with a notebook and questions. We talked for some time and although I was fully aware of his background and the difficult episodes in his life his responses were always positive and tinged with a sense of fun and humour. In retrospect he managed this situation so well, keeping me at ease and the meeting warm and light-hearted. He later opened a cupboard laden with sketch books and drawings and spreading them on a table asked if I would like to borrow some for my thesis. Overwhelmed by this offer I tentatively selected a small collection which showed a progression from his student days to the present. The most recent he signed, dated and gave to me. He also gave me a lovely studio portrait of himself which he said he had taken after his first exhibition at The Lefevre Gallery because he was 'pleased as punch' with himself. When he was sure I had all the information I needed he offered me a boiled egg and Christmas cake. He then finished an amazing day by donning his trilby and overcoat and seeing me safely onto the bus to Stalybridge. He continued to support me throughout the year by writing numerous letters and arranging for me to meet people such as Monty Bloom who had a wonderful collection of Lowrys as well as works by many of his contemporaries. He also sent books which he thought might be of help. Having completed and submitted my thesis, I returned the original copy complete with drawings to Lowry. A few weeks later this was returned to me with the drawings intact. This was accompanied by a letter saying he found the work very interesting and to keep the drawings. He wished me well in my teaching career and also good health which he said 'after all is the most important thing.' (private correspondence from the present owner, 2012).
