The previous owner of this work, Reverend Geoffrey Bennett had been a close friend of the artist, since they had met in Manchester in 1926. After Bennett moved with his wife Alice to Cumbria, Lowry became a regular visitor to the family home. Cowles Fish & Chips, Cleator Moor depicted a local shop in Cleator Moor and was drawn with the Bennetts' son's pastels during one such visit.
