Alfred Drury, the celebrated 'New Sculptor', studied under Aimé Jules Dalou first in London and, such was his influence, joined the Frenchman as his assistant upon his return to Paris in 1879. Together with Harry Bates, George Frampton and Alfred Gilbert, Drury extended the boundaries of late 19th Century sculpture with his innovative style. Another cast of Spring sold Christopher Wood - A Very Victorian Eye, Christie's, London, 28 February 2007, lot 174. A life-size marble version is preserved at the Auckland Art Gallery, New Zealand, a gift of George and Helen Boyd, 1899 (see A. Lys Baldry, 'A Notable Sculptor: Alfred Drury, ARA', in The Studio, 1906, vol. 37, p. 17).
