The composition of this painting, which is dated by Waterhouse to c. 1755-7, is echoed in a drawing made two or three years later (see J. Hayes, The Drawings of Thomas Gainsborough, London and New Haven, 1970, II, no. 233, pl. 70). The influence of the Dutch landscape painters of the 17th century, notably Wouwerman and Wijnants, is evident in this early work. Gainsborough had already used the motif of the peasant on the bank in his painting of Landguard Fort (see Hayes, op. cit., 1982, no. 37).
