According to Christine B. Podmaniczky, N.C. Wyeth painted The Spearman in March and April 1906. Referring to the present work Wyeth wrote to his mother, "To-morrow I will finish another of the Indian series which Mr. Pyle likes better than any. An Indian boy spearing a trout." (as quoted in C.B. Podmaniczky, N.C. Wyeth: Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings, vol. 1, London, 2008, p. 152) The Spearman was initially illustrated in an article entitled "The Indian in His Solitude" in Outing Magazine 50 and subsequently printed as an advertisement for Outing in A Wyeth Portfolio.
