A delightful example from acclaimed Lebanese artist Paul Guiragossian's oeuvre, Le Mariage brings together the warmth of a crowd and a profound sense of community that glowingly pulses with life. This superb example of Guiragossian's minimalist style showcases his distinctive use of vibrant and joyful colours in a geometrical linear composition broken by a vivid rhythm of tenderly curved lines. The faces of the figures and the draping of their clothes referencing a point in the artist's career before his compositions became entirely abstract.
A notoriously depressed artist, Guiragossian found comfort in the idea of the group. In Le Mariage, these female figures, brought together on such a joyous occasion as a marriage, bear life and brightness together as a whole, as if extracting their strength from one another, a characteristic trait of the Middle Eastern family structure. Although the vibrancy of Guiragossian's palette and the title of his work suggest an aura of happiness - his choice to reduce the human form to its essential vertical element expresses his sense of solitude.
These fragile and cherished moments of friendships and close relationships thus become sparse interludes between the pain of separation and isolation, a reminder to truly cherish special days.
