Brought back from China in the 1870s by Arthur Ilbert (d. 1899) of Westbrook Upwey, Dorset, a merchant and Michael Inchbald’s great-grandfather, who by family tradition was 'the richest taipan in Shanghai’ (P. Inchbald, Jack of All Trades: And His Family, privately published, 1999, p. 41).
